Path to employment success
Transitioning back into the community after incarceration is full of difficulties. For Anthony, overcoming challenges, such as learning technology and finding employment in a world vastly different from the one when he entered custody, included participating in our Foundations of Digital Literacy course.
The digital era is confusing, even when you’ve kept pace with technology. Imagine if you’re dropped into this unfamiliar world after not using a cell phone, not knowing how to scan groceries, use an app, or create strong password protection. Computer skills are necessary for success in our everyday world and in today’s job market. The JFS Foundations of Digital Literacy course prepares participants to earn the nationally recognized Northstar certification in Digital Literacy through sessions on computer and internet skills, email systems, Microsoft programs, Google Drive, Telehealth, Digital footprint, and much more.
Anthony learned about the Foundations of Digital Literacy class through his job coach at CrossPurpose, a nonprofit focused on career and community development. “I didn't know anything about digital literacy, mainly because of being incarcerated,” shared Anthony. “Even the simplest task when I first got out was difficult. So, learning about digital literacy now at this stage in my life is helping just in general, but it's really helping employment-wise.”
In-person learning provided skills and camaraderie. Anthony shared, “Everybody in the class was so excited. Nobody knew anything about computers, and then we just started picking it up, cheering each other on to pass the modules. As each day went on, it became a little easier and easier. Michael [JFS Digital Literacy and Admin & Customer Service Trainer] was so patient, and he wanted us to know the information—that's his drive, he wants us to learn.” Outside of the class, Anthony still refers to the recorded sessions when he needs a refresher.
Anthony began a new job at P2P Recovery Resources and is excited about his new position as a peer coach. “You guys gave me the ability to send them another certification, and it just made it easier for them to hire me,” said Anthony. “Gearing into my career path now, I can open my laptop and just be confident that I'm doing what I'm trying to do, you know, and it's just the basics right now, but it's enough to get me going on what I need to do.”
When asked if he would recommend the Foundations of Digital Literacy course to others, Anthony gave an enthusiastic “Yes. It was a bright spot for me. Honestly, it's like, man, these people care. Like they want to teach me to really be successful with this thing, and it's just great for real.”
We’re excited to share an update we received from Anthony:
Just wanted to say “Hi” and let you know that I started my new job today, and I got to tell you that you guys had a big part to play in that because you taught me the computer skills that I needed, and I'm just forever grateful. Thank you so much for all you've done.
