March Featured Program - Employment Services
Career Services has always prioritized helping individuals holistically. When clients come to us, the solution is never as simple as "hurry up and get a job." There are often barriers such as childcare needs, trauma, and transportation that can severely limit opportunities.
For one incredible and resilient single mom, all these barriers and more stood in her way. However, thanks to her hard work and dedication, she was hired on the spot at the New American Women's Empowerment (NAWE) hiring event in September. It was the first job she ever had, and despite it being more than 10 miles from her home, she took the bus every day to make it to work. NAWE would not have been possible without our incredible volunteers who helped set up, interpret, assist clients in speaking with employers, provide transportation, and more.
When this client expressed that, while she is so grateful to be working, the multiple-hour- long commute on the bus was wearing her out, the Career Services team turned to our amazing pool of volunteers for help. Now, a few times a week, she connects with others and builds community as she receives rides to or from work. For a woman who rarely has the luxury of self-care or relaxation, these rides make such an impact. We are so grateful for our volunteers who go above and beyond, donating their time, energy, and gas to make these urban road trips possible. The impact on this client and her family cannot be understated.
