March Volunteer Spotlight: Refugee Resettlement On-Call Support

JFS’s Yana Vishnitsky Refugee Resettlement Program has over 100 volunteers helping resettle hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers across Colorado. Volunteers play a critical role in setting up housing, transporting families, locating schools, and acclimating newcomers to US culture.

Refugee Resettlement On-Call Support Volunteers can choose a flexible schedule. Volunteering typically takes place during weekday business hours but can include some evenings and weekends.

Here is what some of the volunteers have had to say about the important work they do:

Love all the good work that JFS does throughout the community and the feeling that I'm contributing to the community and helping those in need. – Nora M.

I love meeting new people with diverse backgrounds. – Joel S.

This program embodies the notion of "welcoming the stranger." Having lived voluntarily in other countries myself, I know it's challenging to navigate a new place, new language, and new customs. However, I was not fleeing danger or difficulty. – Tara W.

Having been married to an immigrant, I know how hard it is to get a good start in this country, and JFS directly helps people do that. – Sherry G.

I love seeing people smile. We should all have equal access to food and shelter, and I love that JFS helps make that possible for so many people. – Kasia M

Sometimes it does require patience and sign language, but it is really rewarding when you realize what has brought a person or family to our country – Robbie L.

If you need more incentive to take action to volunteer, read what Tara W. had to say, “Even if you only have a few hours a month, sign up! Even if you are only able to help once a year, sign up! It's an amazing experience to welcome the stranger and impact a new arrival's life.”

We thank all our resettlement volunteers for everything they do to support our refugee clients. We are looking for more volunteers to support this program. Additional vetting and training required. Contact Marissa for more information.
