KidSuccess: Making healthy changes for 30 years

Ruby Chavez, KidSuccess Lead Bilingual School-based Case Manager

KidSuccess Lead Bilingual School-based Case Manager Ruby Chavez has been with JFS for seven years, and she plays an instrumental role on the KidSuccess team, working to support students and combat the mental health crisis.

Ruby works in all of our KidSuccess schools and is on the front lines, making a difference, welcoming children, and providing the necessary resources for them to heal. Our KidSuccess program’s unique hands-on approach promotes a supportive school environment for students that fosters achievement, high self-esteem, resiliency, and personal responsibility.

Each day, Ruby sees how schools are one of the first places where signs of mental health challenges can be observed, and addressing issues early can prevent more serious problems later in life. “Early intervention helps students develop coping skills and emotional resilience. Also, many students may not have access to mental health care outside of school due to financial, geographic, or social barriers, and school-based services can provide support for students who might not otherwise seek help or who face obstacles in accessing mental health care in the community,” shared Ruby. “When students get referred to KidSuccess, therapists work to prevent smaller issues from growing into more serious mental health crises, including anxiety, depression, self-harm, or suicidal thoughts.”

We know that mental health is sometimes stigmatized, misunderstood, and not openly discussed. However, over the years, Ruby has seen a significant shift in how mental health is perceived. Public figures, social media campaigns, and mental health organizations have worked to raise awareness, reducing the stigma. As a result, mental health discussions are more open, and many advocate for better understanding and support. “Many families that have newly arrived in Colorado or have begun treatment with KidSuccess have realized the importance of mental health and the impact it can have on students and their well-being,” said Ruby.

One of Ruby’s favorite quotes is, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” – Epictetus. She believes one way to "react" is by getting help, and we couldn’t agree more!

Ruby and the KidSuccess team are making healthy changes at schools and helping students succeed every day. We are grateful for their contributions!
