JFS Group Home reunion celebrates lifelong friendships

Longtime JFS volunteers and supporters of the JFS Group Home, Scott Friedman and Gail Nussbaum, a former JFS board member, recently brought together former residents, staff, volunteers, and friends for a joyful afternoon of reconnecting and reminiscing. The afternoon was filled with hugs, laughter, games, wonderful food, and countless stories as old friends caught up and celebrated the special community that JFS helped create. 

The reunion served as a wonderful reminder that while the JFS Group Home may have closed, the friendships it fostered continue to thrive. More than reconnecting with old friends, the afternoon celebrated relationships that have stood the test of time and continue to enrich the lives of everyone involved. Reflecting on the day, Scott Friedman summed it up best, "The afternoon brought back wonderful memories of years gone by and reminded us that the quality of life is determined by the quality of our relationships." 

The reunion also gave everyone an opportunity to learn what the former residents are doing today. 

Laurie is 80 years old and lives in a wonderful host home in Boulder near his nephew, Ari. He still loves everything Jewish and, of course, the Broncos! Laurie stays connected to his JFS community by attending JDA Haverim Bingo on Zoom, where he loves seeing longtime friends, as well as participating in the JFS Disability Services holiday party and summer picnic.

Micah, Nora, and Fil live together in the same host home, where they continue to enjoy the stability and support they need. Nora and Micah are still together and continue to share their special bond. Micah and Fil participate in the JFS Arts & Community Exploration program, where they take part in center-based activities and community outings. Micah also competes in the Special Olympics and enjoys spending time with his Best Buddies peer buddy, while Fil is hoping to be matched with a buddy of his own.  

The JFS Best Buddies Citizens chapter matches Jewish adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities to build meaningful, lasting friendships. We are currently seeking new peer buddy volunteers. Peer buddies must meet with their buddy once a month and stay connected by phone, text, or email weekly.
