JFS Graland Country Day School Partnership

Group of volunteers from Gralanad Country Day School

For the past two years, JFS has proudly partnered with Graland Country Day School as part of its Grade 6 service-learning program. Through this innovative interdisciplinary curriculum, the sixth-grade students explore and learn about poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity in their math, English, science and history and art classes.

To bring these lessons to life, JFS welcomes groups of Graland students to volunteer at the Weinberg Food Pantry. During their weekly visits, the students engage in hands-on service, assisting with tasks like stocking shelves, sorting produce, and breaking down boxes. This experience provides them with an understanding of how the food pantry operates and allows them to connect with the importance of serving those in need.

Volunteers who work alongside the students also find the partnership rewarding.

"The students have shown great teamwork and heart—helping others makes them truly shine. Their productivity and generosity are inspiring—they've done a great job!" said Kia, a JFS volunteer.

Ann, another JFS volunteer, added, "I am very impressed and grateful that the students dedicate their time and energy to the food bank. Their willingness to learn about hunger and deprivation firsthand is truly commendable."

In addition to volunteering in the food pantry, the students actively addressed food insecurity by organizing a food drive and donating the items to JFS. At the end of the year, they focus on raising awareness by hosting the Empty Bowls event, where they present their insights educating others on what they learned during classes and throughout their service experience. The students also display their ceramic “empty bowls” to symbolize the impact of poverty and food insecurity.

Through this partnership, Graland students gain a deeper understanding of social challenges and become empowered to make a meaningful difference in their community.
