We are excited to introduce Joanie R., our January Volunteer of the Month. Joanie volunteers with our Employment Services team as an English in the Workplace teacher, helping individuals learn English and gain confidence in speaking in the workplace.

Staff member Lilia shared:

"Joanie is so great with our clients and has been so instrumental in teaching them English and helping them build confidence in speaking!"

Q: Tell us about yourself and your background.

JR: I have worked as an administrator and teacher for both Adams County/Commerce City as well as Denver Public Schools.  Programs I worked with include preschools, special education, and general education.  I am currently volunteering as a teacher for the Jewish Family Service class, English in the Workplace.

Q: What volunteer role do you have with JFS, and what roles have you had with JFS?

JR: I volunteered previously with Jewish Family Service to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to a small group setting of clients. I am currently working with clients enrolled in the English in the Workplace class.

Q: What motivated you to begin volunteering with JFS?

JR: I love teaching ESL and feel it is one of the most important skills clients need in their searches for employment opportunities. I heard about the ESL classes from a community member and decided this was where I could be most useful.  I have worked with JFS for over a year, teaching ESL classes as well as serving as a cultural mentor for individuals as needed.

Q: What's your favorite part about volunteering with JFS, and how has being a JFS volunteer impacted your life?

JR: The clients I have worked with are amazing!! They work very hard to learn English. One of the things I love most is when a student has been diligently working on vocabulary, concepts, etc. and that magical moment when it all comes together. Also, the staff I have had the pleasure to meet are also incredible. They are amazing and always provide me with support when needed.  Their dedication to ESL services (as well as everything else they do) is evident.

There is so much that I like about Jewish Family Service, but probably the clients are number one.  I enjoy learning about the various cultures of the people I have met.

Q: What would you say to someone considering volunteering with JFS?

JR: I would encourage them to try it.  The many programs that JFS supports provide a wealth of opportunities and experiences.
