Reflect and create connection and belonging during the High Holidays

Social support and community are proven critical elements in our well-being and lead to better physical and mental health, including living longer and creating a solid foundation to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Sometimes, however, many with disabilities and their families feel isolated and alone.

One of the things we do during the High Holidays is reflect on what we did the previous year and what we can do going forward for more fulfilling and meaningful lives, not just for us but for others in our community. It’s an opportunity to improve ourselves, be intentional with our goals, and prepare for the new year. This year, we encourage everyone to consider our social connections and values. Can we enhance our relationships, especially with people with disabilities? What can we do to make new connections?

JFS Jewish Disabilities Advocates (JDA) has created two new resources to share suggestions and help you get started— Social Connection, Reflection, and Renewal in 5784 offers an activity to help you reflect and plan for the new year; Exploring Social Connectedness and Mental Wellness, written in collaboration with the Blue Dove Foundation, provides suggestions for reaching out to those who may be more isolated. In the new year, let’s commit to prioritizing social connections for ourselves and others.

JDA creates resources throughout the year to raise awareness and understanding of a variety of disabilities and how the Jewish community can engage and support individuals with disabilities and their families.
