Year-End Reflections from Family Safety Net Director

As our busiest season of the year comes to an end, I am humbly reminded why we do this work. The holiday season is a challenging time for staff and clients because emotions are high, we have lots of financial and relationship stressors, and there is always more to do than we have time for. As staff, we remind one another that it’s the holidays and that things will settle down in January. During the Jewish High Holy Days in September and October, we organize food drives at synagogues throughout Denver and the surrounding smaller cities. We collect literally tons of food for our food pantry and for our Thanksgiving program.

From the CEO: Lobby and Atrium Remodel

I have some exciting news to share about a new project at JFS that will enhance the quality of our services and provide a better experience for those we are fortunate to serve. We are remodeling the lobby and atrium at the JFS Tamarac building to provide a more welcoming and comfortable environment for visitors of the Weinberg Food Pantry and others who come to JFS for help. Thanks to the support of generous donors and volunteers, work is already underway and should be completed later this fall.

Hannah Kutnick's 3rd Annual Backpack Bonanza to Support Lunchbox Express News Coverage

12-year-old Hannah Kutnick recently organized her third annual “Backpack Bonanza,” a drive to generate donations for back-to-school backpacks and school supplies for at-risk children. She raised more than $3,500 this year and a total of $8,100 over three years. She was able to negotiate significant discounts with several retailers to put together 400 full backpacks to supplement those provided by Jewish Family Service.

Third Graders Put Jewish Values into Action to Benefit JFS

Performing acts of loving kindness (gemilut chasadim), doing good deeds (mitzvot), philanthropic giving (tzedakah), and working to repair the world (tikkun olam) are all integral parts of the daily teachings at Denver Jewish Day School (Denver JDS). One way these values are taught is through the Helping Hands project, which connects each grade in the Lower Division (kindergarten through fifth grade) with a local nonprofit. JFS is the proud recipient of the third graders’ year-long community service project.

A Strong Corporate Partner for Three Decades

Otten Johnson Robinson Neff + Ragonetti PC (Otten Johnson) has supported JFS since its founding 34 years ago. For this local law firm, which primarily specializes in real estate and land use matters, philanthropy doesn’t just mean writing a big check. Instead, they ask their employees which nonprofit organizations they are passionate about, which then connects the firm to meaningful ways to get involved in the community.
