Year-End Reflections from Family Safety Net Director

As our busiest season of the year comes to an end, I am humbly reminded why we do this work. The holiday season is a challenging time for staff and clients because emotions are high, we have lots of financial and relationship stressors, and there is always more to do than we have time for. As staff, we remind one another that it’s the holidays and that things will settle down in January. During the Jewish High Holy Days in September and October, we organize food drives at synagogues throughout Denver and the surrounding smaller cities. We collect literally tons of food for our food pantry and for our Thanksgiving program.

I have some exciting news to share about a new project at JFS that will enhance the quality of our services and provide a better experience for those we are fortunate to serve. We are remodeling the lobby and atrium at the JFS Tamarac building to provide a more welcoming and comfortable environment for visitors of the Weinberg Food Pantry and others who come to JFS for help. Thanks to the support of generous donors and volunteers, work is already underway and should be completed later this fall.

Hannah Kutnick's 3rd Annual Backpack Bonanza to Support Lunchbox Express News Coverage

12-year-old Hannah Kutnick recently organized her third annual “Backpack Bonanza,” a drive to generate donations for back-to-school backpacks and school supplies for at-risk children. She collected and donated 400 loaded backpacks to Jewish Family Service, which were distributed to children in need through our Lunchbox Express program and to other families served through various JFS programs. She raised more than $3,500 this year and a total of $8,100 over three years. She was able to negotiate significant discounts with several retailers to put together 400 full backpacks to supplement those provided by Jewish Family Service.
