What Are You Thankful For?

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Thanksgiving is a time where we all count our blessings and think about what we're grateful for. And now we have a way for you to express your gratitude while helping others in the community by making a tribute gift to JFS.

The Hebrew term for gratitude is hikarat hatov, which means "recognizing the good." Share your gratitude and recognize the good things in your life today with a tribute gift to JFS by contacting Jari Thymian at (303) 597.5000 x386 or donating online.

Even Oprah's celebrating gratitude! Check out her World of Gratitude!

Please leave comments about what you are thankful for this year. Happy Thanksgiving!

Students Learn About Giving Back!

Friday, November 19, 2010

Students from Temple Sinai Preschool and Kindergarten and Stanley British Primary School, learned what it means to give back this week.

Temple Sinai held their 2nd annual Thanksgiving food drive for the JFS Weinberg Food Pantry. Each class collected a different item from a list of traditional holiday foods we requested - 530 pounds all together. Then the kindergarten teachers taught the kids who the food was helping and turned it into a math lesson by counting and sorting the items the whole school collected. When Chad Livermore, Food Pantry Operations Coordinator, went to pick up the food, the kids helped him load the food into bins and got to check out the cool Pantry truck!

Third, fourth, and fifth graders from Stanley British Primary School came to JFS on Wednesday to learn more about the agency and tour the Food Pantry. They bagged rice for the Pantry clients and made beautiful cards to be distributed with the Thanksgiving baskets next week. The group was very enthusiastic and enjoyed learning about how the Pantry operates, such as the fact that we do not charge clients for their food and where donations come from.

Thank you so much to all the students and teachers at Temple Sinai and Stanley British Primary for giving families something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

Healthy Aging: A Symposium

Monday, October 18, 2010

Jennie Creasey, Lindee Burns, Jason Polk, and Becca Lobel

Four members of the Jewish Family Service Senior Solutions Department recently attended the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work’s kick off for their year long celebration of their 80th anniversary – a day-long symposium titled Healthy Aging: National and Local Perspectives.

Jennie Creasey, MSW (’97), LCSW was invited by the school to be on the planning committee for the day’s event. Also in attendance were Becca Lobel, Senior Solutions volunteer outreach coordinator, Lindee Burns, Senior Solutions MSW intern from Colorado State University, and Jason Polk, Senior Solutions MSW intern from Newman University.

The morning of the symposium focused on national perspectives. Dr. Corinne Rieder, executive director of the John A. Hartford Foundation, spoke on America’s Aging Society: Social Work’s Unique Contribution. Then, Dr. Nancy Morrow-Howell, faculty member of the George Warren Brown School of Social Work in St. Louis, spoke on Maximizing the Productive Engagement of an Aging Society.

The afternoon breakout sessions led by local professionals addressed some of the most cutting-edge issues facing practitioners and students today in the field of aging. Some of the topics included: ethical issues, aging at home, exercise, and spirituality.

Jennie shared, “Being part of the planning committee and attending the event were opportunities that enable us to experience the work we do on a daily basis set into a broader context. The informative content of the day both affirmed the invaluable work of Jewish Family Service’s Senior Solutions department and inspired us to carry on!”

Colorado Nonprofit Association Fall Conference and Exhibition

Monday, October 04, 2010

Last Thursday and Friday, Kari Alpen, Linda Perez, and Alaina Green staffed the JFS and SHALOM Denver booth at the Colorado Nonprofit Association Fall Conference and Exhibition at the Sheraton Hotel Downtown Denver.

The exhibit hall was packed with nonprofit, business, and foundation exhibitors. Attendees found new ways to save money on products they're already buying, learned about new services just for nonprofits, and got to know the people they do business with. In addition, many expert presenters offered a huge selection of workshops, featuring innovative new ideas and practical strategies people can put to work in their organization.

At our booth, participants had fun playing our Plinko game to win JFS-branded prizes including full size chocolate bars, chapstick, hand sanitizer, pens, and notepads. We enjoyed meeting people and telling them about the services we provide and how we can help each other!

Check out a video below of a very enthusiastic Plinko player, Scott Mitchell of Vehicles for Charity!
