JFS Sends 300 Kids Back to School with Tools to Succeed

JFS Sends 300 Kids Back to School with Tools to Succeed

Once again we are so grateful for how our community came together this summer to donate money, backpacks, and school supplies. Because of your generosity, we distributed 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to low-income children throughout the Denver metro area this week, a substantial increase over last year! Because of increased donations, we were able to give backpacks out at all of the Lunchbox Express routes.

Hannah and Carla delivering backpacksA big thank-you to Hannah Kutnick, a local student who created “Hannah’s Backpack Bonanza” to collect backpacks and school supplies for us. She created  a video and Sign Up Genius page that her parents, Jay and Carla, shared with family and friends. Her initial goal was to deliver 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to JFS, but she almost doubled that and brought us 180! We are so inspired by this budding philanthropist.

Boys Team Charity member stuffing backpacksThank you to volunteers from Boys Team Charity Mile High League for sorting other donated supplies and packing them into backpacks last week. This group has helped all summer long in the Weinberg Food Pantry, volunteering on Lunchbox Express routes, and more!

Our Lunchbox Express volunteers and bus drivers then distributed the backpacks all week at our 15 sites where low-income kids get nutritious lunches and books. As you can imagine, the kids and their parents were very excited and grateful to have the essentials they need to go back to school.

A student with a new backpackCBS4 News captured some of this excitement on the rainy first day of distribution. Fortunately the rest of the week was sunny and kids got to stay at the sites to eat their lunches and explore what was in their backpacks.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Lunchbox Express this year—as a volunteer, bus driver, book donor, or any other role. It was a wonderful summer and we are working on some exciting changes for next year…stay tuned!
