Getting Ahead In a Just-Gettin’-by World Class a Success

Getting Ahead In a Just-Gettin’-by World Class a Success

Ten people recently completed the 12-week course, "Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-by-World," which is an innovative workshop series that helps individuals and families at-risk for homelessness identify the underlying causes of poverty, increase financial literacy, and design a personalized action plan for escaping poverty and achieving long-term self-sufficiency.

Getting Ahead graduateDuring the last session, which was also graduation, participants took a survey. One hundred percent said they feel like they have a better understanding of what poverty is like in our community and have a better understanding of the causes of poverty. All the individuals also said they would recommend this course to other people.

Some of the comments from the class included:

  • “I re-learned how to take a task to improve my life and make changes for myself—to break it down to simple and reachable goals—one step at a time.”
  • “The discussions and personal assignments were my favorite part of the class. It taught me a lot more about myself and how to deal with certain situations better.”
  • “I learned many new tools to help me when I feel stuck.”
  • “I don’t have to feel poor.”
  • “The class helped me significantly overcome my social anxiety that has always caused me a lot of issues in my life.”

Shelly Hines, JFS’s Family Safety Net director and course instructor, says, “This group bonded really well and exchanged contact information so they can stay in touch. They felt safe enough with one another to share some very personal information, which added a lot of depth to the class. The participants got so much value out of this program, that they want to continue the class, so we are going to get together again in June to talk about next steps.”
