Celebrate JFS Honors Volunteers and Board

Nearly 300 people attended Celebrate JFS, Jewish Family Service's annual meeting and celebration of volunteers, board, supporters, and staff held June 26. Guests of all ages gathered at Palazzo Verdi near Fiddler’s Green, and sampled delicious hors d’oeuvres and drinks while mingling and enjoying the art in the adjacent Madden Museum.

Jay MillerDuring the short program. Jay Miller, JFS para-chaplain, gave an inspirational D’var Torah (commentary) about the important work of JFS, which is rooted in Jewish values.

Nancy Benyamin, director of Volunteer Services, thanked all of our volunteers, gave some highlights of volunteer Nancy Benyamin giving award to Tamara Weilachievements from the past year, and introduced the Max Frankel Volunteer of the Year Award recipient, Tamara Weil. Tamara is a dedicated JFS Friendly Visitor and, more recently, a member of AmeriCorps who works with refugees through Jewish Family Service. She related that she learned from both her and her husband, Ken’s families the importance of weaving volunteerism into every phase of life.

Shepard NevelPresident & CEO Shepard Nevel congratulated Tamara and thanked all of the volunteers who give generously to JFS. He gave a brief update from the past fiscal year and talked about some program highlights. He also thanked the exemplary staff, board, and generous supporters.

She thanked everyone and reflected on her two years as board chair. She passed the gavel to Charlie Gwirtsman, incoming board chair. He then installed new board members Jonathan Alpert (who was unable to attend), Michael S. Asarch, and Lorez Meinhold and recognized outgoing members Debbie Aleinikoff, Carla Bartell, Jack Brodsky, Randy Davis, Kenneth Glickstein, and Will Gold for their years of dedicated service.
