A Grateful Reflection on My Summer Internship at Jewish Family Service

Celebrate JFS tastingDespite all I’d heard about what interns do, I didn’t go on any coffee runs during my time as a Jewish Family Service (JFS) intern. Instead, I went on photoshoots and learned how to capture the excitement between Colorado Senior Connections members passionately discussing the program over lattés. I happily accompanied coworkers to catering tastings for our Celebrate JFS event rather than ever being asked to go pick up everyone’s lunch. I never was directed to monotonously organize files for the office, but I did spend a rewarding afternoon organizing fruits and vegetables at the JFS Weinberg Food Pantry with volunteers to help feed the Denver community.

Do you know of a socially isolated senior? JFS Senior Solutions wants you to strengthen our community by reaching out to seniors in need. Loneliness and social isolation hinder the lives of older adults in our community every day. Loneliness is a subjective feeling of being alone that we may feel from time to time. In contrast, social isolation is the objective lack or absence of social contact. Considering the U.S.’s older adult population will continue to expand until its estimated peak of 81.1 million older adults in 2036, senior social isolation (SSI) is a growing concern.

Boulder JFS Presents Reel Hope Boulder: Behind the Screen with Bruce Vilanch

Boulder Jewish Family Service (JFS) will host its fifth annual fundraiser, “Reel Hope Boulder” on Saturday, October 14 at the Boulder JCC, 6007 Oreg Avenue. Guests will enjoy an entertaining evening with award-winning writer, comedian, songwriter, and actor Bruce Vilanch. Ron Bostwick, a freelance event producer and announcer, will interview Vilanch to showcase a “behind-the-screen” account of Bruce’s storied decades-long career. Bostwick has interviewed numerous celebrities at the Boulder International Film Festival, as well as featured speakers at three Reel Hope Boulder events.

Longtime volunteer Evan Silverman was looking for a new way to get involved with JFS last year. He came up with a creative program that pairs his love of reading and desire to connect with people with disabilities. In this blog post, Evan tells us how the JFS Group Home Reading Club was born! The JFS Group Home offers a warm, caring residential environment and skilled supervision for adult residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
