Team ACE: A slam dunk good time

ACE Special Olympics Team

The JFS Arts and Community Exploration (ACE) program is a person-centered program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, engaging in center-based activities and community outings. Last January, we took it to the hoops with our inaugural ACE – Special Olympics basketball team.

ACE program participants signed up to participate and committed to weekly practices to compete in Regional and State Competitions. After months of practice and hard work, our Unified team placed bronze at the Special Olympics State Basketball tournament. JFS Board member Fran S. is the team’s volunteer head coach and provides leadership during practices and games. We have three other volunteers, Betsy A., Allan S., and Maria X., and a staff member who are also instrumental in ensuring the team has successful regular practices and, of course, fun! We are so thankful for them.

Team ACE enjoyed regular practices so much that even though the season is over, they continue every week, building on their skills related to shooting, passing, and dribbling. It’s impactful to see the team’s camaraderie and how they constantly support each other on and off the court. The ball’s in Team ACE’s court for success!

“Basketball has been a huge success for ACE. With the help of great volunteers, all the players have improved their game in the few short months we have been practicing and having a good time doing it.  Can't wait until next season,” shared ACE Program Manager Judy Pankoff.
