October Volunteers of the Month

David and Marla, October Volunteers of the Month.

We are excited to introduce David and Marla N., our October Volunteers of the Month. David and Marla's dedication and teamwork truly make a difference for the Mobile Food & Hygiene Pantry. We're so grateful for their commitment and the positive impact they have on the community.

Staff member Henry shared:

"David and Marla are a husband-and-wife tag team. They volunteer separately and together based on the Mobile Food & Hygiene Pantry's needs. They take time out of their busy work and marathon schedules to volunteer their time and give back to the community. They go above and beyond to make sure they can consistently support the Mobile Pantry. Great volunteers like them are what make the Mobile Food & Hygiene Pantry a success — we could not do it without them."

Read more about their volunteer impact below:

Q: Tell us about yourself and your background.

DMN: David is a partly retired ENT specialist and spent his career specializing in ear surgery.  Marla has a background in public health and recently finished running a marathon in each of the 50 states.

Q: What volunteer role do you have with JFS, and what roles have you had with JFS?

DMN: We both volunteer on the Mobile Food & Hygiene Pantry and have done so since 2023.

Q: What motivated you to begin volunteering with JFS?

DMN: We appreciate how much JFS does for all people that need social services, and we wanted to contribute some help for those experiencing food insecurity in areas that are food deserts.

Q: What's your favorite part about volunteering with JFS, and how has being a JFS volunteer impacted your life?

DMN: Getting food to a diverse population in underserved areas with few options for healthy food choices and watching them enjoy their independence and joy of choosing foods which they can share with their families.

Q: Do you have a memorable story about your JFS volunteer experience to share?

DMN: One of our favorite days was when a customer came in with his Iguana on his shoulder and wanted to be sure to find some foods his special pet would enjoy.  We think we filled the bill!

Q: What would you say to someone considering volunteering with JFS?

DMN: It's a great organization, with a great mission that attracts great people to work and volunteer.
