In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, JFS Refugee Mental Health Systems Navigator, Lawahiz Abbas, shares her recommendations for small daily actions that can help improve your mood, reduce stress, and strengthen social connections. 

Self-awareness tips: 

  • Start your day with a positive intention. 

  • Take a 10-minute walk outside. 

  • Pause to check in with your emotions. 

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day. 

  • Write down three things you’re grateful for. 

  • Try a few minutes of mindfulness meditation. 

Social connections tips: 

  • Reach out to a friend or coworker, or reconnect with someone you haven’t spoken to recently. 

  • Give someone a genuine compliment. 

  • Offer help to someone who may need it. 

  • Share a small win with others. 

  • Thank someone for their support. 

Stress management tips: 

  • Focus on one task at a time. 

  • Take short breaks throughout the day. 

  • Listen to music that relaxes you.
