Mental Health FY25 Impact Report
JFS partners with clients, families, and the community to create opportunities to achieve emotional wellness and stability. Our team of skilled mental health professionals is committed to helping, improving, and making a difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues, such as loss, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and medication management.
Skilled, culturally competent therapists use trained medical interpreters to promote healthy work, school, and family relationships for resettled refugees adjusting to life in Colorado.
Client Impact Story
Maya, a refugee mental health client, faced many adjustment challenges after arriving in the U.S., including language and cultural barriers, financial insecurity, and difficulty navigating unfamiliar systems. She also suffered from pervasive fear resulting from an extensive history of trauma, including experiences of war and violence. Her fears ranged from going outside and nighttime to being in enclosed spaces, especially basements. Both she and her children experienced nightmares that caused ongoing sleep disruption.
Working with a JFS therapist, Maya focused on grounding and relaxation skills to help regulate her nervous system and used gradual exposure interventions to manage her fears. Her therapist also taught her several coping skills, which Maya practiced and shared with her children.
Over time, Maya has made significant mental health progress and achieved many successes. She and her children have fewer nightmares and now experience improved sleep. The family goes on outings with their mentors, takes walks in the park, and Maya finalized her U.S. citizenship. One of her most meaningful milestones is that she now participates in her therapy sessions via telehealth video from the basement and can play there with her children—a space she once feared.
The family also received case management support to help promote stability and benefited from several additional JFS services, including the food pantry, financial assistance, and the Bright Holidays program.
